You’re ready to leave X — or maybe just thinking about it. Either way, this guide is here to support you.

Why Leave X?

Leaving X – Its a decision thats bigger for some of us than others!

X (formerly Twitter) has become a hub for outrage, manipulation, and extremist amplification. Under Elon Musk, the platform has doubled down on hate speech, disinformation, and profit over people.

Algorithms reward outrage. Verifications are bought. And the community that once made Twitter meaningful has been splintered or silenced.

If you’re feeling like it’s no longer a space that reflects your values — you’re not alone.

Watch – What I Did when Leaving X

Let me walk you though, step-by-step how I left the platform in this short video.

Your Exit Path to Leaving X

This isn’t about rage quitting. It’s about making an intentional shift.

Here’s how you can start:

1. Download Your Data

Keep your memories, messages, and media:

• Go to More → Settings & Privacy → Your Account → Download an archive of your data

• Follow the steps. You’ll receive a download link via email.

2. Let People Know (if you want to) You’re Leaving X

You don’t need to explain anything. But if you want to invite people to stay in touch:

• Pin a goodbye tweet: “I’m moving off X. Here’s where you can still find me.”

• Link to your site, newsletter, or Bluesky/Signal.

• Use a pre-made graphic or share your reasons — or just say goodbye.

3. Deactivate Your Account

• more → Settings and privacy → Deactivate your account

• You can still reactivate within 30 days if you change your mind.

Alternatives to X

There’s no one-size-fits-all replacement. But here are spaces people are moving to:

Bluesky: Decentralised, calmer, and growing daily. greggtheartivist.bsky.social

Mastodon: Fediverse-style community (a bit more technical)

Email newsletters: The most direct way to stay connected

Signal / Telegram: Secure messaging and community group options

You’re Not Alone Leaving X

Leaving a platform — even a toxic one — can feel like a big decision. Especially if it’s been part of your work or identity.

But you’re not disappearing. You’re just choosing a new path.

Let me know what you’re feeling — I’d love to include shared reflections on this page from others who’ve made the move.

FAQ’s – Frequently Asked Questions About Leaving X

Since Elon Musk’s takeover, X has amplified hate speech, disinformation, and monetized outrage. Many users no longer feel safe, represented, or aligned with the platform’s direction — and are choosing to leave in protest or pursuit of better alternatives.

Go to:

More → Settings & Privacy → Your Account → Download an archive of your data

You’ll receive a download link via email with all your tweets, photos, and DMs.

Deactivating your account hides your profile immediately. After 30 days, it is permanently deleted. You can reactivate within that window if you change your mind.

People are moving to:

Bluesky – Decentralized, clean, and community-focused

Mastodon – Fediverse-based, open-source

Newsletters – Personal and direct

Signal / Telegram – Secure group and 1:1 messaging

That’s okay. This isn’t about pressure — it’s about intention. You can still start by downloading your data, updating your bio with links to alternative spaces, and reflecting on how the platform makes you feel.
